Florida, Alaska and Wyoming voted on Tuesday, and by the count NBC News gave at the end of the night three Republicans carrying the president's endorsement had been beaten.

In Wyoming the state superintendent, Megan Degenfelder, lost the Republican primary for governor to a state senator, Eric Barlow. In Florida's seventh district the sitting congressman Cory Mills lost to Ryan Elijah, a former television journalist. In the nineteenth, a local conservative talk radio owner, Jim Schwartzel, took the nomination from another candidate the president had backed.

NBC noted where this fits: governors' races have gone this way for him several times this cycle, with his preferred candidates also losing in Iowa, Georgia and Minnesota, and a late dual endorsement in South Carolina after the first pick was heading for defeat.

Mills was the loudest of the three. He is under a House Ethics Committee inquiry and a Justice Department investigation into his finances, and the president — who endorsed him early — did not repeat that endorsement in the run-up to the vote. CNN wrote that the former news anchor who beat him had the backing of two Republicans in the state's congressional delegation.

The governor's race in Florida is now set and neither party was surprised. The Republicans chose Byron Donalds, whom the president endorsed. The Democrats chose David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who left the party in 2018 and became a Democrat last year. They will meet in November for the seat Ron DeSantis has to give up.

The other result both outlets led with came from the Democratic side. Angie Nixon, a state representative who calls herself a democratic socialist, beat Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council official, for the Senate nomination in Florida. CNN read it as the same current running through the party elsewhere, though it noted that two House incumbents in redrawn districts held off challenges from their left the same night.

Why it is on the board

Second on the NBC News most-read list and third on the New York Times's when we collected. Those are the only two American reading lists this board can see, and the same night was near the top of both.
