France's most-read piece on Monday was not one fire but the whole continent's, set out as a round of positions. The framing matters: the ground is dry because the vegetation and soil have been worked on by heatwaves running one after another since the end of spring, so each new ignition starts in better fuel than the last.

Belgium. Rain arrived on Monday over the largest forest fire in the country's modern history, on the German border, which has taken some 3,000 hectares. About 500 firefighters and soldiers are on it. The terrain is wooded and badly broken, which is why crews cannot get close to the flames, and the German army has lent two helicopters fitted with water tanks.

Portugal and the Landes. Both were still burning as the week began, and both appear in the same bulletin — which is the point of the piece. A French reader opening it gets Belgium, Portugal and a fire in their own south-west in one screen.

Why it is on the board

It was the most-read story on 20 Minutes in France. We already have the Belgian fire on this board from Sunday, when it was a Belgian story with German helicopters. A day later the same fire is a paragraph inside a European summary — the same event, moved from foreground to list, which is what happens to a fire once it stops getting worse.
