A Greek-flagged oil tanker, the Skiros, was attacked in the Black Sea near the terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium after finishing loading there. RIA Novosti carried the report, citing Bloomberg and its sources. The attack was on 16 August. The company listed as the ship's operator told Bloomberg that no one was hurt. No details of how it was attacked were given.
The terminal matters more than the ship. The CPC system carries up to 83 million tonnes a year and is the largest route for oil from the Caspian region to world markets — and the main one for Kazakhstan. The line runs about 1,500 kilometres from fields in western Kazakhstan to the Black Sea coast, where the oil is loaded onto tankers.
Its shareholders are a map of the problem: Russia through Transneft, Kazakhstan through KazMunayGas, Lukoil structures, a Rosneft joint venture, and the American companies ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell.
CPC has reported Ukrainian attacks on its shipping repeatedly in recent months and has had to suspend loading because of them. In late July the Wall Street Journal reported that Washington had warned Kyiv against attacks on vessels and oil infrastructure in the Black Sea.
Why it is on the board
It was among the most-read on RIA Novosti in Russia. Note what the Russian item is built from: a Bloomberg report, quoted. Three of the four Russian entries on this board today are Russian coverage of what non-Russian outlets have said.
