Rachida Dati is being reinstated as a magistrate at her own request, the French justice ministry said on Friday. She is due to go on trial for corruption.

The ministry's wording does the work. She applied for reinstatement as a magistrate, it told AFP, as she is entitled to do, and will shortly be assigned under the ordinary transparency procedure for magistrates — that is, after the opinion of the Superior Council of the Magistracy, which the justice minister will follow. Nothing in that sentence is discretionary except the timing.

The post itself comes from Le Nouvel Obs, which both accounts we hold credit: first deputy prosecutor in the central administration of justice, inside the ministry. She is 60, was beaten in the Paris municipal elections in March, and remains mayor of the city's 7th arrondissement for the centre-right.

Why it is on the board

Fourth on Le Monde's most-read list when we collected, with a clip in the French video lens.

This is the first article we have carried from France in a week, and the gap is ours rather than the country's. Our board had stood since 29 August.
