Milo Yiannopoulos, a British commentator, was taken into immigration custody at the airport in New Orleans on Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security says. He entered the United States legally in May 2019 and then, in the department's words, chose to overstay his welcome in violation of the nation's laws. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal after he did not appear at his hearing, and he will stay in custody pending removal. The Guardian found him listed in ICE's public detainee database, which confirms he was born in the United Kingdom and gives nothing else — not even where he is held.

Almost every fact above comes from one place: a DHS spokesperson's statement, which both accounts print in the same words. Where they part is small and worth noting. NBC News reads 22 July as the date of the hearing he missed; The Guardian reads it as the date the removal order was issued. The same sentence, attached two ways.

What The Guardian carries and NBC News does not is what he had been saying about this. In June 2025 he wrote that California needed ICE checkpoints at supermarket entrances, petrol stations, strip malls, intersections and government buildings, with on-the-spot deportation for anyone who could not prove they were in the country legally. The Guardian also reports that Laura Loomer, an activist allied to the president, claimed credit for his detention and said she had reported him to ICE — her claim, not a confirmed account.

The rest is biography, and the two outlets pick different pieces of it. NBC has him as Ye's chief of staff during the rapper's presidential runs in 2020 and 2024, working at the Yeezy clothing brand until he resigned two years ago, and before that an editor at Breitbart who left in 2017. The Guardian has him as an intern for Marjorie Taylor Greene in 2022 and a worker on Ye's 2024 campaign. Ye was scheduled to perform in New Orleans on Friday night; neither outlet establishes whether that is why he was in Louisiana.

The department attached a line about policy to the arrest: the administration is working to ensure that people in the country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of the country to self-deport. TMZ reported the arrest first.

Why it is on the board

Sixth on NBC News's most-read list when we collected and seventh on the New York Times's, with a clip in the American video lens.

It is also sixth on The Guardian's list in Britain, which is the reason we have a second account at all. He is a British national being removed from the United States, so the story sits on two of our boards at once — and the British paper is the one that went looking for what he had written about ICE.
