The government of Tamil Nadu passed its hundredth day on Monday. That is a small milestone in most states and a large one here, because the party running the state is TVK, and until this year the office had alternated between the DMK and the AIADMK for more than five decades. TVK won the assembly election in April and took office on 10 May under C. Joseph Vijay, until recently the biggest star in Tamil cinema.

The first files signed were welfare. Domestic consumers using up to 500 units get 200 free units of electricity every two months. A women's safety task force was proposed. Sixty-five anti-narcotics units were set up, and 717 TASMAC liquor shops operating near schools and places of worship were closed.

The second theme is investment. The government says 104 agreements signed in the hundred days carry commitments above one lakh crore rupees. At the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors' Conclave alone, 97 agreements worth ₹67,452 crore were signed, which the state projects at 1.07 lakh jobs across 23 districts.

The criticism is not about ambition. It is about running things: law and order, sexual crimes, power cuts, rubbish collection. Farmers are restless. There are complaints about transparency. And the chief minister does not take questions from the press and does not answer criticism directed at him — an unusual posture for a first-term government still explaining itself.
