Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said Warsaw's position on Nord Stream could rebound on Poland's own security in future. РИА Новости reports her telling a briefing that a public statement by the head of government of a large European state justifying what she called a terrorist act committed in front of the whole world sends a destructive signal.
She was responding to the Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, who the day before had spoken in defence of the people German law enforcement regards as the alleged perpetrators, and called on Berlin to drop the prosecution.
The explosions on Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 happened on 26 September 2022. Germany, Denmark and Sweden did not rule out deliberate sabotage. Nord Stream AG said at the time that the damage was unprecedented and that no repair timeline could be estimated.
German prosecutors regard Serhii Kuznietsov as the coordinator of the attack and the leader of the divers. The Ukrainian was detained in Italy a year ago and handed to Germany some months later; his lawyer has said he was charged with a war crime. According to media reports cited by РИА, the indictment contains several indications of possible involvement by Ukrainian state structures.
