A Russian drone hit a warehouse holding weapons for Ukraine's military late on Friday, on the edge of Kyiv, and the shells, mines and drones inside began to detonate. At least 37 people were killed. Forty-two were injured, four of them children, seven taken to hospital, and 381 residents were evacuated, 59 of them children. Among the dead was Taras Didych, the head of the Dmytrivka community, who had come as one of the first responders.

What the president said next is why this is being read as it is. There are regulations, Volodymyr Zelensky wrote: ammunition cannot be stored near homes or residential areas. The depot, he said, definitely should not have been there. An investigation has been opened into what he called terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosives right next to people, and those who allowed it must be held accountable. CBS News notes that he did not say what had caused the detonation, or what the warehouse was holding.

Russia's defence ministry did say. Its forces, it stated, targeted an ammunition depot in Myla, a village west of the capital, holding components and launch boosters for FP-1 and FP-2 long-range drones.

The damage figures do not line up, and the difference may be in what is being counted. BBC puts it at about 130 homes in the village; Kyiv Post and CBS News both say approximately 50 residential buildings. A resident, Liubov Pavlenko, 45, told BBC that everything was completely damaged, standing at her house about 200 metres from the warehouse.

BBC adds that this is the second strike on a munitions depot near Kyiv in recent months, and that it has brought the anger back.

Why it is on the board

Ninth on BBC's most-read list when we collected, with a clip in the British video lens.

Eight items sit above it and none is about Ukraine: a cuttlefish migration in Australia, a boxing comeback, a road sign Canada put up to needle the American president, a fraud story, the deportation we carry on the US board today, a conviction, Norway's new king making his first speech, and Canadians boycotting American goods.
