A minibus belonging to the municipal health department of Imbituva, in the Campos Gerais region of Paraná, was hit head-on by a truck at about half past three in the morning on Wednesday. Twenty-three people were killed and five were taken to hospital. The crash was at kilometre 209 of the BR-373, in the municipality of Ipiranga.
The minibus was carrying patients and the people accompanying them from Imbituva towards the metropolitan region of Curitiba, where they had appointments and other medical care booked. Twenty-two of the twenty-three killed were aboard it. The other was the driver of the truck.
Via Araucária, the concessionaire responsible for the stretch, said the dead were thirteen women, eight men and two children. CNN Brasil reported that five had been identified so far — three men aged 22, 50 and 49, a woman of 26 and a child of nine. The five who came out alive were four adults and a child of six, all taken to health units in the region.
The Federal Highway Police said its first findings indicated the truck had crossed into the opposite lane before striking the minibus. The truck, a Scania carrying plates from Erechim in Rio Grande do Sul, was empty and running between Carambeí and Prudentópolis with only its driver aboard.
The state government declared three days of official mourning. Imbituva, a town of the kind that sends its patients to the capital for treatment it cannot provide, declared two.

This came to us on one lens, and not the reading lists. Video of the crash was running at 32,120 views an hour — the strongest single signal on our Brazilian lenses when we collected, and stronger than anything the Brazilian reading lists carried that morning.
That is worth saying plainly rather than smoothing over: what we can measure here is what Brazilians were watching, not what they were reading. The two do not always agree, and on this morning they did not.
