A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia at 07:34 local time, 12:34 GMT, at a depth of 103 kilometres in Chocó province, according to the country's geological service. At least 132 people are dead, a state of emergency has been declared, and the toll is expected to rise with more people feared trapped under collapsed buildings.

The shaking was felt across an enormous area, stretching for hundreds of miles across western Colombia. More than 480 people were injured, the country's Association of Capital Cities said in an update on Monday.

The epicentre was near the village of San José del Palmar in Chocó. The local mayor, León Fabio Marín Moncada, said there had been no deaths or injuries there despite the roads in and out being damaged.

The worst damage was about 55 kilometres away, in Pereira, in Colombia's coffee-growing region. Local authorities reported at least 40 dead in the city's metropolitan area and 65 collapsed buildings. Videos verified by the BBC show at least one building coming down in Plaza Bolívar, the main square, with debris and dust across an open space where many people had gathered. Surrounding cities and the Valle del Cauca region were also hit hard.
