Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad clashed with police in Ranchi on Tuesday, a day after officers baton-charged students marching on the state assembly. Several ABVP workers who set out for the Jharkhand Assembly were detained in the old Vidhan Sabha area; some climbed onto police vans.

ABVP, the student wing affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, had planned to surround the assembly. The BJP called a statewide shutdown over the police action of 10 August.

The protests are about the state's recruitment examinations. Thousands of candidates for jobs through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission marched on the assembly on Monday, broke through barricades and clashed with police, who used water cannon near Jagannathpur Temple and fired tear gas. People were injured.

The protesters want the JSSC Combined Graduate Level examination cancelled, a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into alleged irregularities, and changes to how recruitment is run.

Jharkhand minister Irfan Ansari accused the BJP of trying to hijack what he described as a peaceful protest.

Why it is on the board

India is the one country on this board with no readable most-read ranking, so it enters on the other two lenses. Aaj Tak and NDTV both led video on the Ranchi protests on Tuesday, and the subject was on Google Trends for India. The article text here comes from Hindustan Times, matched to that signal.
