Ukraine sent drones across Russia through Sunday night in one of the largest aerial attacks it has mounted in the war. Six people were killed.
The numbers on offer do not match, and that is the first thing to say about them. Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said some 600 drones were detected heading for the capital, a third of them brought down over the Moscow region. Russia's defence ministry said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight across the country. Russian state media described it as the largest Ukrainian drone attack since the start of the year.
More than 150 drones went into the Rostov region in Russia's south-west, where they damaged houses and a railway station and started a forest fire.
Kyiv has spent this year moving from occasional long-range strikes to sustained ones, aimed at military industry and energy plant. It has also repeatedly hit the vast warehouses of Wildberries, the Russian online retailer, burning stock worth billions of dollars.
Why it is on the board
It reached the most-read column on NBC News in the United States. What is worth setting beside it is what Russian readers opened the same morning: not this. The two most-read items on RIA Novosti in Russia on Monday were both commentary — a claim that Kyiv had stopped publishing its intercept figures, and an Italian magazine praising a Russian official's warning. The largest drone attack of the year is the American story of the night; in the Russian most-read column it is not the story at all.
