The count from the Chinese side of the Gyirong disaster stood at seven dead and 554 missing as of one in the morning on the 29th, the Tibet emergency management department said. Two villagers from Resuo remain the only people pulled out alive. Yesterday's figures, timed at three in the afternoon of the 28th, were five dead and 558 missing. Two more deaths, four fewer missing; the announcements do not say whether those are the same four.
What the third day looks like is best read in the other numbers. There are 2,141 rescue personnel of all kinds now in place. Eighty-six specialists from natural resources and related fields are checking the surrounding slopes and roads for further geological hazards. A five-person watch post has been set up on the barrier lake to monitor it in real time against a second disaster. Firefighters and township officials have gone in 505 times between them.
And 1.02 kilometres of road has been cleared.
Premier Li Qiang went to Gyirong county on Thursday to direct the response on the ground and, the account says, to visit the affected on behalf of the party centre and the State Council.
Why it is on the board
Fourth and sixteenth on Baidu's hot-search list when we collected, and fifth, fifteenth, twenty-fifth and thirty-first on Weibo's — six entries across the two, three days after the event.
This is the second instalment we have carried, and the machine linked it to the first by itself. Our thread matcher compares the original-language headlines, so it works when a follow-up is written in the same words as the first report — which is what happened here, and has not happened before on our boards.
All three accounts trace to the same source: the Tibet emergency management department, reached directly by the mainland outlets and through Xinhua by the Hong Kong one. We are not reading three counts. We are reading one, three times.
